'before' -- understanding English

"Before I was a dad", means "In the time I was not a dad (earlier in my life)".

"Before, I was single", means "In the time earlier than now, I was single".

Notice that the comma is absent in the first sentence. The second sentence would normally have a 'when' formulation inside of it (for example, "before, when I was single").
